VC Content Spotlight: Notion Capital
Notion Capital is a London-based VC firm focused on European SaaS, fintech, and Cloud opportunities.
Notion has invested in over 100 companies and its portfolio includes the likes of Workable, Upvest, and Shutl. It has recorded at least 21 exits since 2009, and recently closed its fifth fund worth €300m - oversubscribed despite market headwinds.
When it comes to content, the firm isn’t leaving too many stones unturned. Let’s take a closer look at how they’re leveraging content to stand out in a sea of firms, educate founders, build relationships, and generate quality deal flow.
Content Spotlight
Website
Notion’s website reflects the design ethos of many of its portfolio companies. It is clean, aesthetically pleasing, and intuitive to navigate - something many venture firms with dated websites reminiscent of the Geocities age could learn from.
Its website attracts about 31,000 visits a month according to SimilarWeb, which excludes traffic to externally hosted assets such as its podcast. This puts it in the middle of our list of top top VC website traffic rankings.
Notion’s Library boasts numerous resources, including articles, podcasts, news, reports, and events.
Articles
Notion’s team consistently creates and curates compelling blog content on founder-centric topics (below right), publishing on average several articles per month.
Articles extend to industry and business-building insights, founder stories, and news snippets.
Podcast
Notion was early to the podcasting game. The firm was publishing podcast episodes as early as March 2016, long before Sacks and Chamath made themselves a household name by way of the All-In podcast.
The Notion Capital podcast, hosted by Paul Papadimitriou - a sought after TV and radio host, features entire seasons dedicated to topics such as go-to-market strategies, scaling, talent acquisition and more.
Podcasts feature Notion’s team and portfolio founders riffing on insights they’ve gleaned from operating, as well as interviews with big thinkers from other companies.
Reports
Notion publishes comprehensive reports for SaaS and cloud founders to help them best navigate the startup journey, covering topics such as M&A strategies, finding product market fit, and assessing talent.
Notably, it gates certain reports to help it build its mailing list of prospective portfolio founders and partners.
Events
Like NYC’s FirstMark, Notion makes online and in-person events a big part of its identity and brand. It’s how it connects with founders and the broader startup community. You can check out a number of these event replays on YouTube here.
Books
Notion Capital partner Chris Tottman recently co-authored The Go-To-Market Handbook for B2B SaaS Leaders. For most founders, the challenge of building a compelling product is secondary only to effectively promoting and selling it.
The book is presented as a series of workbooks, designed to help founders and operators work through key go-to-market strategies and tactics in a methodical step-by-step manner and test recommendations with their target market.
Upon its release, it hit number 1 on Amazon across three categories.
Talent Network & Jobs Board
Notion maintains a comprehensive talent network and jobs board.
Its jobs board not only helps portfolio companies find talent, but also acts as a resource that draws traffic to its website, helping the firm build its mailing list, improve its SEO-signalling, and build new relationships.
Social Media
Notion is modestly active on Twitter where it boasts just north of 8,000 followers, but comes into its own on LinkedIn where it boasts over 25,000 followers and shares content every week.
Final Thoughts
With thousands of venture firms active across the globe, and the top several percent capturing the lion’s share of returns, Notion is an example of a firm that is diligently using content to demonstrate its expertise, educate its audience, and stand out from the pack.
