Founded in 2014 by Daniel Petre and Craig Blair, AirTree Ventures has diligently used content to become a go-to online destination for Australian founders.

AirTree boasts a portfolio of over 90 companies, including breakout companies such as Canva, Linktree, Immutable, A Cloud Guru, Employment Hero, Mr Yum, and Who Gives a Crap.

Even after marking down portfolio companies in its early funds by an average of 18% during the recent downturn, AirTree’s IRR on these funds sits at 49%, making it one of the best performing venture capital firms not only in Australia, but in the world.

What AirTree publishes

Unlike many firms whose content strategy might begin and end with a few sporadic blog posts and links to third-party news outlets, AirTree takes an omni-channel approach.

Open-Source Contact Lists

AirTree maintains an open-source Airtable database of VCs, angel investors, startup grants, tech companies, mental health resources, and more. When it comes to founder-centric content, the most important box to tick is value, and few things are more valuable for founders than lists of potential sources of capital. The beauty of open-source is that AirTree doesn’t need to manage the lists themselves, instead sourcing entries from the broader Australian startup ecosystem.

How-To Guides

AirTree publises numerous founder and investor-centric guides on topics as far flung as such as hiring talent, employee share schemes, preparing for VC meetings, crafting parental leave policies, and more.

Blog / Insights

Unlike too many venture firms that publish sporadically, AirTree’s blog is updated regularly and features both firm and founder-led insights on myriad topics, as well as investment notes.

Templates  and Legal Documents

Early-stage startups are resource-strapped and can ill afford the fees of most law firms. Fortunately, AirTree has published free startup documents and legal templates that run the gamut from SAFE notes, term sheets, shareholder agreements, and more.

Founder Spotlights

Content and reach provides an opportunity to promote and elevate not just the firm, but perhaps more importantly, its founders and portfolio companies. This is content that startups can subsequently use to cultivate relationships and sell.

Industry Trends & Analysis

AirTree publishes comprehensive perspectives on industry trends such as crypto, fintech, healthtech, the 2022/23 market downturn, capital efficiency, and so much more - making it a valuable resource for entrepreneurs operating in these sectors or wrestling with such questions respectively.

Specifically, it publishes countless how-to guides, administrative templates, and open-source contact lists for potential capital sources, that differentiate it from other Australian firms.

Podcast Appearances

Finally, while AirTree doesn’t have a podcast of its own yet, its team regularly feature on other industry podcasts - reflecting the firm’s appreciation of the power of content.

Social Media

The firm is also very active on LinkedIn and Twitter where it boasts over 42,000 and 11,000 followers respectively, sharing not only its own content but also cultivating relationships by interacting with and sharing content from other organizations and people.

Final Thoughts

While AirTree’s content is comprehensive, it is also presented in a way that the best UI designer at their best startup would be proud of. It is easy to navigate and reflects highly on the firm, filling would be portfolio founders with confidence that this firm gets startups and would make a valuable addition to its cap table.
